(soft acoustic guitar music) - [Ken] So this is Elena Gallegos, I was like, I'd read that your music is so inspired by your countryside.
- [Griffin] I always appreciated getting out into the wild.
That's where I feel the most comfortable, for sure.
- I thought, "Let's get out for a little hike."
- I'm glad you look at me and think hiking.
That means a lot.
It means a lot.
- Yeah, dude.
(Ken laughs) - [Griffin] Try to do as many full-band shows as possible.
I also still love to play acoustic, you know?
- [Ken] Totally.
- I was gonna do "Stevenstown" and do my love song for my house.
(soft acoustic guitar music) ♪ Well, there's a quiet road in a quiet town ♪ ♪ Not too many people ever comin' 'round ♪ ♪ The rooster crows at the break of dawn ♪ I taught myself how to sing, so I don't really know how else to sing other than just like really loud and really, really emotional.
- [Ken] You're a painter too, right?
- Yeah, that's what I went to school for, yeah.
- Oh, okay, cool.
I feel like the biggest lesson I learned as a painter was that like, once you create something and you show it to the world, it like, no longer belongs to you, which I think is really helpful in songwriting.
'Cause like, you're not just writing for yourself.
I mean, you're writing for an audience.
And they're never gonna get true meaning behind a song, but they'll add their own, and that's the important part.
♪ Goes down in Stevenstown ♪ When I started Ghost of Paul Revere, it was just me with that name for a while.
When I was in college, it was Griffin Sherry and the Ghost of Paul Revere.
I never really felt like myself on stage.
There was some other part of it that I couldn't describe.
The ghost was that unnameable thing in music, that like, it's a chance for me to leave myself for a second and become invested wholly in this like, singular idea, which is like whatever the song is, you know.
On the best day, that's what it is.
♪ Oh, as the sun go's down in Stevenstown ♪ I've been playing music pretty intensely for the last 16 or 17 years (audience cheers) and I just don't know what else I would do.
I just love it too much.
It's just the only thing that ever like, it's not the only thing that brings me joy, but it's one of the things.
(chuckles) - Give us more!

I was in a band for a very long time.
That came to a close, that chapter came to a close and I felt a little lost.
You know, spent some time in a Hundred-Mile Wilderness.
It's the last stretch at the end of the Appalachian Trail, exploring, having fun.
When I started puttin' the songs it was kinda like, "Oh, this, you know, represents a lot in my life."
- Mm-hm.
- Means a lot to me.
So that became the title of the record.
♪ Who is the man you see ♪ ♪ Does he still look like me and do I even care ♪ That idea of having this untamed area at the end of a really long journey and knowing that you're gonna start something on the other side of it, I think really spoke to the spirit of the record.

It's kind of a love letter in my house and where I ended up in my life after, you know, a lot of transition.
It just kind of got stuck in my head one day and came right out.
(soft acoustic music) ♪ Well, the years have come and the years, they'll go ♪ ♪ Time will fly as we're movin' slow ♪ ♪ Sit with me in the golden hour ♪ ♪ Feel the love and feel the power ♪ There's something about the like the history of a place, right?
Especially when you can add your own history to it.
It's just one of my favorite things about owning a home that I didn't realize was gonna be one of my favorite things.
Understanding that the bones of that house have a history that predates me and the land itself.
It's like, now I've gotten to know the land and it's like, you know, there is a rhythm to it and it's great.

It feels really weird to be filmed the whole time, but.

Were you at the zoo show?
Who said that?
I opened for Band of Horses here in town two years ago.
Before that, I think the last time I had played in town was at the zoo.
- Oh, cool.
- Which was kind of wild.
We played the Albuquerque Zoo in the middle of the summer to several people and a peacock that would not be quiet the whole time.
(audience laughs) It was quite the time.

And I was very offended.
