(rock music) (crowd cheering) Tonight's bands, from across New Mexico, Innastate and Side Montero.
Baby, you lock me out, as if I were a stranger Baby, you cut me out, as if you had a razor Oh I said maybe, I want to stall Don't want this love in danger Oh I said maybe, I want to stall And now I am a stranger And what I can't understand is how we were once friends Now it's hard to be near you, and how am I to treat you And what I can't understand, is how I'm left to guess We said that never would we sever We said we'd always be together And now I'm sailing, out of your life and scene And it is strange that, I thought we'd never been We'd never been We'd never been We'd never been Baby I've seen it all, our life to be is fading While we're still blaming each other for All that we have created.
Oh, I said maybe You want it all, and now I see the stranger We tried to brave it, these seas and storms But in the end we gave in And what I can't understand is how we were once friends Now it's hard to be near you, and how am I to treat you And what I cannot understand Is how we were once friends And now I'm sailing, out of your life and scene And it is strange that, I thought we'd never been We'd never been (instrumental break) And now I'm sailing, out of your life and scene And it is strange that, I thought we'd never been We'd never been We must remain perfect strangers Cause I love you my friend We must remain perfect strangers Cause I know what we'd been We must remain perfect strangers Perfect strangers We must remain perfect strangers We must remain Perfect strangers I love you my friend We must remain (song slowing down to finish) (audience cheering) - [Ken] Hey dudes.
- What's up?
- Hello.
- [Ken] How did you guys get together?
How'd you find each other?
- We met on Craigslist.
Yeah, you tell him the story 'cause... - Well it goes a little little further back than that.
Rylan's dad is my best friend, and I grew up playing music with him We had bands many years ago, and Rylan used to play bass for us I had this idea to start a reggae band start talking to Rylan about it and he's like, "Yeah, totally down Well we needed a drummer and so we put an ad on, no, we didn't put an ad on Craigslist - No, Lawrence.
- I put the ad on Craigslist - And Romeo you joined us a few years back as well yeah?
- Right after the debut album came out, Verde, I was hanging out with LaDonna Bravert Allard in Albuquerque for some business you were conducting as well.
- Right, I ran into you, I was like, "I know you!
You play saxophone!
Take our album.
Learn this," I told him.
And he's been playing with us since Shine your shine Warms my soul, make I feel alright In the dark, I feel so scared I'd be so alone What's really cool about this band is we spend a lot of time crafting Like we'll have a song idea, and then it won't see the light of day for two years because we're trying to figure out like how it's all gonna come together - I like that even like "Sailing" for instance, you know it sounds like a really happy song but it's a song about a breakup, isn t it?
Right?
- Yeah, it definitely is.
I wrote that at a particularly tumultuous time in my life where my parents were splitting up and I feel like Innastate has always kind of been like a little bit about that, trying to spread a positive vibe in a way that, you know, like we embrace the darkness as well.
We embrace the bad sides of what goes on in lives.
- There's balance and all that, so it's important to... - And that's what Innastate is, we're in a state.
- [Ken] Ah!
- Yes sir, yes sir.
- New Mexico has really got a strong music community, and I think that's one of the things that Bands of Enchantment has been showcasing is that New Mexico music community and that's incredible.
- I am so proud to be part of this community, seeing my peers, you know, like just putting on this amazing music and putting on these awesome shows.
You're my shine, you're my shine - I think this is good to show the world that you know Albuquerque is filled with amazing musicians, and honestly not all of them even play out.
You're my shine, you're my shine, you're my shine - We are so excited to be here with you all today.
We want to give a big shout out to "Bands of Enchantment" for filming us and dealing with all of our silliness.
This is a song called "Promise."
I can't remember the last time I felt this way The sun grows brighter every day I see your smile and it lights my way You make me feel alright, yeah Is it your laughter or your sweet caress Or is it your kisses that I like best Walk along with you in a state of bliss You make me feel alright, yeah And I'll be there if the teardrops fall Said I'll be there if there are none at all I carry your heart like the morning sun It holds the promise of a day to come (instrumental break) I know it's fast and it scares me too All these crazy things I say and do But it feels so good to be right here with you You make me feel alright, yeah And I'll be there if the teardrops fall And I'll be there if there are none at all I carry your heart like the morning sun It holds the promise of the day to come Said I'll be there if the teardrops fall And I'll be there if there are none at all I carry your heart like the morning sun It holds the promise of a day to come The promise of a day to come The promise of a day to come It's the promise of the day to come - We are filming a television show, if you didn't notice.
Hold for train and for guitar.
- Count 'em out loud.
We'll count 'em out loud, ready?
Get down boy.
- One, two, three, three and a half four, five, six, six and three quarters seven, eight!
(drumroll) All right, bands back together.
Can everybody give it up for Side Montero (audience cheers) Honeystick, sweeter than s girl with sun-kissed lips No I wish that we would stop this sh** Because I'm over you But you're speaking my language You ain't native, well it's okay baby So elated when you say my name It's something new All right Whoa She said come and visit for the weekend Know I had enough of your teasing Because I'm burning up, Molotov Well I don't care anymore Not anymore Anymore Not anymore, yeah yeah yeah (instrumental break) Now is this what I'm here for Asking for a little more Give me something new to embrace like you Because I cheated all my chances away Never knew I needed Always something to change Picking up the pieces of this torn out page Of what I said, unsaid Not anymore Not anymore Not anymore, yeah yeah yeah (instrumental break) - Woo!
(audience cheering) - Thank you.
You guys wanna hear my Korn impression?
- Not really.
- Do I?
(impersonating Jonathan Davis scatting) (band laughs) Should I do that?
- [Crew] Speeds.
- We're all from the North Valley of Albuquerque.
Us three grew up in the same neighborhood since third grade.
And then he lives in a different neighborhood.
- Yeah I met Levi in high school and then I joined him for a gig because Jaren was playing bass - I was not a good bass player.
We brought Ben in, needed a bass, so yeah.
Grew up jamming together since third grade, and then once we got to high school we found Ben.
- So you were a rock band in like third grade.
- Yeah, yeah.
And it was about as good as a third grade rock band, so.
- I would say it wasn't until we like all went away for college and kind of were separated, had time to like delve and create our own sound and kind of just like mature a little more, and then we came back, it was like, oh now we can mix these ideas again.
And we're just really good friends and we wanted to make it work.
I'm losing my mind Whoa my oh my my my Well I died tonight and set my ego on fire - The craziest part is writing the lyrics altogether 'cause we sit in a room together and we have a big whiteboard and we just brainstorm ideas.
It can get a little hectic when we're writing, as far as that goes.
That's the... - That's the contentious part.
- That's the, yeah.
- Generally the people who bring something in are Jaren and Aaron.
I'll write my part and then Levi will write his part and then we will try and get the structure down.
And when we get to lyrics is when we are all writing together I'm losing my mind - And it never, the songs that we bring at the beginning never end up so like what they do at the end, it's just completely different.
- We all have four different visions for where we want the song to go and we fight it out to where we can get a happy mutual outcome.
It's a team effort.
- Even though we like, you know, argue about it and fight about it at the end of the day, like when we come up with something, we can all four say that like hey we wrote that, or like all together like you know collaborated on that.
- Yeah.
Oh baby, lately you whoa - This place called the S where you go drifting.
We decided to take the Montero and go and drift and long story short, I ended up rolling the Montero and we ended up crawling out of the side of it because it was on its side.
And then after I was grounded for about the whole summer we came up with, you know, a band named Side Montero - [Jaren] Whack summer.
- Yeah it was a crazy summer.
- Decent band name.
Same footprints as yesterday Shapeshifters, who won't tell you their name Five minutes and you're out of fame One too many of the Shotgun Novocaine 'Cause I want control And you set it off tonight Well don't say no more Let's stop with all the lies And I wanna know What's really on your mind You talk too cold For me to recognize I can't remember my name Ooh-oh-ooh-oh-oh Say something Sugar puppy Ain't it funny how everybody knows your name Sweet nothings Could never get me Your stolen glances tossed across the dance floor I fall in, too easy A puzzle, piece body You borrow, tomorrow No wonder, you don't make sense Alone Competing, for show So far, so close Well if it's all the same I can't remember my name (instrumental break) (audience cheers) - Thank you.
High and low Turned into an episode Well just lay it down And slowly let your breath out and breathe out Well, the seasons come And the weekend goes away Twist and turn to the way out Tunnel vision is stretching on and on Drowning out the days now And I'm burning toast And I'm burning Ooh-ooh-ooh Ooh-ooh-ooh And I can't quit I've lost so many f***ing friends and it's a quick fix To throw it all away again Away again S-s-s-s-s-s-s Say-say-say-say-say T-t-t-t-t-t-t Take off S-s-s-s-s-s Say-say-say-say-say T-t-t-t-t-t-t-t Take off And I'm burning toast And I'm burning (instrumental break) (audience cheering) No I don t mind waiting such a long time for patience for three red lights No I don t mind Oh!
Aahh
