(slate clicks) - Please, tell me the origin story; what's it been like?
- All right.
- Go ahead.
- Here we go.
So.
♪ I wasted a drunk ♪ It didn't start remotely, but it did, like, begin on Instagram.
I used to have a Strokes fan account, and Ines ran a YouTube page that-- - I did a lot of Strokes covers She followed me; I was following her.
This guy was like, you should meet up with Ines.
And luckily, we lived very close to each other.
Like, a subway station away.
- She came over, she was all tiny, and she had her big bass and-- - I was 17.
- [Ines] I was 22, and I was like, oh, look at this child.
I wanna protect her.
♪ I wasted a drunk ♪ ♪ And now I can't even remember ♪ ♪ Why I wanted to talk ♪ - [Ines] We didn't hit it off quite right away.
- Yeah.
- Like, imagine meeting someone from Instagram.
That's how it was.
- Yeah (laughs).
- But we had The Strokes in common, and we started playing the song 12:51 .
It seemed like we had, like, great musical chemistry.

Most of the time, it's pretty good.
And it always ends up being a fun story.
- Yeah, we call it, like, throwing ourselves in the pool, and then learning how to swim.

(audience cheers) (audience claps) Okay, so Ines and I, maybe 'cause of The Strokes, we both like The Strokes, (random people clap) and now we have a band that has their own songs, and we're gonna play them for you (audience whoops) when Ines is ready.
But until then, we'll wait.
(upbeat music plays) This guy invited me to a show, an Arctic Monkeys cover band.
(laughs lightly) And they were like, dude, gonna, wanna, like, open for us?
- They were the Arctic Monkeys and we were gonna be The Strokes - Yeah, that band kept calling - Ah, cool, cool, cool.
- Us, like, The Stroke Girls, and that's when we decided we did not wanna be The Strokes Girls.
We wanted to be our own thing.

Well, I feel like your head is proportional to your body.
- Oh, thank you so much.
- [Martina] Oh, you do have a big head (laughs).
- It's true.
The Strokes were playing in New York City on New Year's Eve.
Yeah, so I was like, we should go.
- And I said, no.
I don't know this girl.
I'm not gonna go to New York City with you.
- But I'm quite insistent.
- She's very persuasive.
- And so you got to the show.
- So, yeah, we got-- - Oh, the show got canceled because of COVID.
- Aw.
- But we got to New York City.
- A series of events happened.
Like, there was a snowstorm, and then we got COVID so we couldn't get a flight for the next month and a half.
And we ended up playing three shows, and at one of those shows, a label from Los Angeles came, and they offered to sign us.
And that's pretty much how we started.
Wow, what a ride.
It's a movie.
♪ I don't know ♪ ♪ How to fix it ♪ ♪ How to feel when You're gone ♪ ♪ It's the silence that no one talks about ♪ - [Martina] For the first album, we didn't really pull from a lot of personal experiences because we didn't really know each other.
And so, we kind of made stuff up, but then, we had so much time together, and we had so many experiences, and we were like, now we have stuff to write with.
I read you quit your studies and jobs, and you just jumped into the music?
- Well, I had to quit to go to New York.
I had a new job, and they were not gonna give me vacation (laughs).
So I was like, sorry, I have to go be a rock star.
- Yeah.
- Be right back.
(Ken laughs) - [Martina] When we came back from New York, it was like, okay, we either go back to our normal life or we start these new lives.
I remember I was gonna study biology, and my bio teacher was like, are you sure you're gonna do this?
Don't you wanna do something that you're good at?
And I was like (laughs), yeah.
- Whatever, biology teacher!
♪ It's the silence that no one talks about ♪ (audience cheers and claps) - [Martina] It was very scary to just start something with someone you don't really know.
- Mm-hm.
- But, luckily, we're good people; we're good friends.
