- I've been calling myself a songwriter for 22 years now, and only twice in that time has a song shown up all at once, and this is an example of one of those.
We'd been traveling from Austin up through the Midwest to Chicago and we ended up in Asheville, North Carolina.
The band got out to go take a nap before we had to load in that night but something told me to stay.
So I stayed in the van, and I grabbed my guitar, and I put my capo on the second fret, which is right here.
Just started playing simple chords.
(puzzled acoustic guitar music) and I felt something coming on.
I knew something was there, like when you're fishing and you're in the honey hole and you got the feeling.
The wind picked up, and the rain started falling as the sun's shining.
And I opened the side door on the van and that mountain air came in, and I knew that something was about to happen.
The line "the devil's in the details" popped into my head, and I almost lost it here becaus I started to overthink it.
But then I said, "No, don't do that.” and I just started repeating, "The devil's in the details.
The devil's in the details."
"The devil's in the details.
The devil's in the details.
The Devil's in the detail shop."
It just kinda came out like that and I saw it in my mind's eye right away like a movie opening, and there's a gentleman playing the character of the Devil, and he's a retired guy sitting in a detail shop.
And he's mad because they're taking too long with his car, but he's also mad at the state of the world because he's curious about the substance of the souls that he's been reaping lately and he's wondering, "Is this really the end?"
And with that, this whole song showed up and Uncle Lucius recorded it a few years ago, and I'll do a very stripped-down version for you.
This one's called "Taking in the View” (puzzled acoustic guitar music) (consolatory acoustic guitar music) - Feather's in for you guys.
- Appreciate it.

- Things are heavier when you pick 'em up and load them in and outta the venues.
You know, we've all gotten a little bit older.
Rock and roll's supposed to hurt a little bit.
It was always fun making music together but this time around, it was fun and just super easy.
- That being said, I think also the producer that we had producing the record, Hal Vorpahl, kinda set that environment up for all of us, and one song at a time, like, all live in a room together, it was awesome, you know?
- That's nice.
