The Environmental Protection Agency on Wednesday proposed putting the historic potteries sites in East Trenton on the National Priorities List, better known as the Superfund list. The EPA today proposed putting the city's historic pottery sites on the federal Superfund list.
The pottery industry was once a powerhouse in the neighborhood dating back to the 1800s.
But that industry left the ground polluted with lead pollution that remains a health threat today.
Soil samples tested by the EPA at Grant Intermediate School, local parks and multiple residential properties have shown elevated lead levels.
The EPA has already started cleaning up the Grant School and park grounds.
That work is ongoing.

If the proposal is finalized, the historic potteries would be New Jersey's 115th active Superfund site.
That's the most of any state in the nation.
