The price of electricity will increase for most New Jersey utility customers starting in June, state officials announced on Wednesday. When the new energy year begins in June, electricity costs across the state are expected to rise between about 17% for PSE&G and Atlantic City Electric, 18% for Rockland Electric and 20% for JCP&L. Starting in June, electricity costs around the state are expected to rise by about 17 to 20%.
So what does that mean in terms of actual cost?
Well, it'll be somewhere between 25 to $28 extra a month with JCP&L customers on the low end of that PSEG and Rockland Electric somewhere in the middle and Atlantic City Electric customers at the high end of the increases.
So why the increase?
Well, PJM Interconnection, the company that operates the electrical grid for New Jersey and 12 other states saw an 800% increase in its costs over the last year.
And that increase drove up prices at the state's annual auction, where local utilities lock in the cost of their electric supply for the year.
That higher supply cost is what's being passed on to you and probably most of Garden State Electric customers.
People are selling electricity to your electric company and then your electric company is going to provide that to you.
In this instance, the electric companies are not making a profit off of this.
This is just the costs for their supply.
